The Tube on YouTube

This week I’ve been filming underground. The Tube (the familiar name for the London Underground) is full of English and I’ve been collecting some of the best known samples on my camera to upload onto YouTube.

tube-map.jpg

The lesson plan starts with the following puzzle for English students: Try to match up the 16 nouns below to get 8 noun-noun colloctation pairs that you might find on the London Underground. For example, the image above is a part of the Tube Map (that is the first one done for you).

  • Alarm
  • Bridge
  • Card
  • Circle
  • Emergency
  • Exit
  • Fire
  • Help
  • Line
  • London
  • Map
  • Point
  • Priority
  • Seat
  • Travel
  • Tube

Now you can check your answers:

Now an observation test: Below are eight excerpts from the language that you have just seen. Each one contains a mistake. Can you correct them?

  • Obstructing the doors can be fun
  • If you see a train being robbed, call the British transport police on 0800 40 50 40
  • Open / closed [beside the train door]
  • Dogs must be worn [on the escalator]
  • Stand on the left [on the escalator]
  • You are being watched
  • Lift flap and push button to start train
  • Take car after drinking alcohol

And finally, what are the missing words?

  • __________ and tickets [above the ticket counter]
  • __________ left
  • Priority seat for people who are __________, __________ or less able to stand.
  • Please __________ your bags with you at all times and report any unattended items or suspicious behaviour to a member of __________
  • __________ clear of the edges [on the escalator]
  • Take __________ care of children [on the escalator]
  • Fire alarm / if you see __________ or __________ operate this fire alarm
  • __________ the gap
  • __________ out

That’s a fantastic idea, I’ll try it with my elementary students, it’ll be a great piece of authentic language for them, thank you very much for publishing it.

Thank you for this excellent clip. I used this in my lesson yesterday in a class of mixed ability adults (who use the Underground) and it went down a treat!
I started with vocabulary for highways e.g. Avenue, Lane etc, then lexis in signage. The clip had to be played a few times, but everyone enjoyed the lesson and what’s more, it was definitely worthwhile.
Thanks again.

this clip contains detailed information about London underground. it’s good for making comparison with one in my country; lots of notes and signs.very impressive and interesting indeed! Well done. tashkent, uzbekistan

Dear Jamie,
My best congratulations on winning the British Council award.
Your web site is a real help for teaching and learning.

Congratulations on the Elton - fully deserved! Realia seems to work with students of a wide range of levels, doesn’t it? Have you tried YouTube extracts of The Real Hustle or Dragons Den, BTW?

AmT.

This is great, I will use it with my intermediate class (here in West London) and let you know how it goes.

Another brilliant idea Jamie, great stuff. And congrats on the Elton - fully deserved.

Doh! I’m so jealous - these are really good ideas and I didn’t think of them myself! I want to be the best, but I can’t with great teachers like you around!!!

Something to say?
