No one captures the Broadcast Yourself spirit better than Tay Zonday, a 25-year-old singer, songwriter and student from Minneapolis. In February 2007, he started recording videos of his own songs in his bedroom studio and uploading them on YouTube. The success of one of these - Chocolate Rain - turned Tay into an internet celebrity within weeks.

Tay became famous for the catchy song, his deep voice, his baby face and for telling viewers, “I move away from the mic to breathe in.” So far, the video has been viewed over 17 million times and Tay has made appearances on TV, radio and in the print media. In March 2008, the song won the music category at YouTube’s second annual video awards.

In November last year, Zonday capitalized on his fame and released a new video called Cherry Chocolate Rain, an apparent endorsement of a new soft drink product.

The Tay Zonday story may be ideal for the classroom since it touches on ideas that are central to the current Web 2.0 climate (video sharing, user-generated content, creative commons licensing, viral marketing, etc).

The activity that I have uploaded on the pdf file link-icon_pdf_05.png above consists of a running dictation followed by a discussion on Tay Zonday’s Dr Pepper endorsement. The pdf file can be printed off or downloaded and saved onto your computer or memory stick.
